The kids are finally back in school! But no rest for the weary. Our job is just starting. No, not our actual career which has been put on the back burner this past year and a half, but our third job – keeping a watchful eye on what is happening at our children’s schools. Gone are the days when we could blindly drop off our children and trust that our schools have the best interests of our children and our families at heart. We know too much now. Now that our children are no longer on Zoom within earshot of us, now that we are not allowed to set foot on campus without being vaxxed, tested, and scheduled, now that the schools have gone eerily silent aside from overly effusive welcome and covid protocol emails, now is the time to be alert.
There are a myriad of things to watch out for, but here’s a brief initial list:
· No textbooks
· No syllabus
· Decline in emphasis on academics
· Ever increasing emphasis on “diversity”
· Increased rhetoric on cultivating “life-long learners” and focusing on the “whole child” so they can “change the world”
· Less meat at school cafeterias and catering
· How are teachers doing their own and class introductions? Is everyone being asked to provide their “identities?”
· Pronouns in faculty and admin email signature lines and bios
· Surveys from the school. Who is the survey targeting? How are the questions framed? What are the questions assuming? Do the questions define any of the terms used? For what is the survey being used? Screenshot these and send them to us!
· Classroom interiors. Ask your child what is in the classroom – an American flag or a BLM or pride flag? A poster of Abraham Lincoln or a poster of Che Guevara?
· What is on the class syllabus? Is AP Chemistry waiting to introduce the periodic table until December?
· Ways the new agenda is being pushed on your children. For example, your child’s English Literature (if they even still call it that) syllabus may include Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go. These and similar books deal with the morality and ethics of human bodies, changing them, using them. Thus, they will likely use this to push transgender issues.
